Story/Advertisement Pictures

Robert Cantu and I decided to do our picture story/advertisement on "Flagler's Few" a 30 minute movie based on two graphic novels that is being shot by the Flagler communication department. In the last semester a group of communication students have adapted the graphic novels to a movie script and are almost done shooting. Both me and Robert have been involved in this project and we chose to use this project to help get the word out on the movie. The movie will be editing over the next couple months and should be premiered during the spring 2011 semester.

Issue Photos (Power)

I chose to do my issue photos on power and the pollution that goes along with it. This first power plant picture is a natural gas and oil power plant owned by FPL and located in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The second uses coal and petroleum, is owned by JEA and is located in Jacksonville, FL.

In 2005 it was found the St. Johns River Power Park was the leader in Mercury pollution in Florida. Coal-fired power plants have lowered their air pollution in recent history but they still are contributing to water pollution. There are laws in place to combat this but many plants have violated the laws without harsh punishment. The St. Johns River Power Park is one such plant which has received 8 violations.

Fashion

All the pictures are of Emily Kirkpatrick, 23, from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. We went to Port Everglades to take these pictures.

I was experimenting with some street lights for both of these pictures.

It was a beautiful sunset and the moon was in clear view. I tried something different while silhouetting Emily, I let the background stay in focus and left her a blurry silhouette in the foreground.
This one was just a regular silhouette with a blurry background

Planet

Low Light(ning)

As I was driving back home from Orlando late on monday night I kept seeing heat lightning strikes in the sky. The lightning continued most of the trip, I did not have my camera with me so I just kept watching and hoping that the lighting would continue until I got back home. It did and I got my camera and my tripod and took these pictures. All pictures took with a long exposure shutter of 15 sec or over.

Most of the time the lightning just lit up the clouds but occasionally you could see actual lightning bolts.

Golf Tournament

These are a few of the pictures I took at the annual St. Augustine Amateur. The tournament took place October 22-24.

Environmental Portraits

I took my environmental portraits of Jonathan Seletyn. He is a flight instructor for Florida Aviation located at the Northeast Florida Regional Airport.

"I've been instructing for about 3 years" Jonathan Seletyn, 25, of St. Augustine, FL

According to Jonathan he has students that come in weekly and "also have international students who come in for a month." The international students fly twice a day and are able to get there pilot license in that one month.

Movement

For this assignment I needed to take one picture with frozen motion and one with blurred motion. I thought taking two pictures of the same thing would show how much the two techniques can differ. The first picture, frozen motion, was taken at f2.8, with 1/8000 shutter and iso of 320. The second picture, blurred motion was taken at f22, with 1/40 shutter and iso 100.

I added this picture I took last year because it was the first time I tried this technique. It was taken at Volusia Speedway in Barberville, FL. It was a lot harder then I thought it would be and out of about 100 pictures only one came out looking ok.

Street Photography

While walking along St. George street looking for something interesting to photograph I found Jack and Pinks. They're 17 and live in St. Augustine right now although it sounds and looks like they don't stay in one place to long. Jack was playing guitar and singing lead and Pinks was singing back up. I enjoyed their music especially one song called "I've got Poor Hygiene" that had lyrics like "This week I drank beer more times then I brushed my teeth." They were both very nice and I'm glad I was able to get some pictures.

Sense of Place

I recently went on a ghost tour that took me to the Castillo De San Marcos (the fort) at night. It wasn't my first time going to the fort at night but I had never really noticed how different it was. I see the fort almost every day and never think to much of it but at night it was ominous and  eerily beautiful. Two nights later I went back at 1am to try and capture that feeling. I used long exposures not only so the pictures would turn out bright but so that you could see more then the naked eye would usually see. I hope these pictures help convey my message.
This picture shows the erie beauty I was talking about. A lot of the fort is lit but it still has its dark corners.
It was very dark in this area of the fort, there are no lights. I like this picture because it shows some beauty that your eyes can't usually see.
The fort towering over someone.
During the ghost tour they kept mentioning orbs in pictures. While I was at the fort I was also asked if I had seen anything or captured any orbs in my pictures. This picture had some cool lens flare that I suppose could be mistaken as an orb so I thought it would be interesting to add.

Ghost Tour Event

These are some pictures from a ghost tour I went on recently, this tour claims that it is the most authentic paranormal tour in St. Augustine. Everyone is given an EMF detector and the tour itself focuses more on the study of the paranormal then just "ghost stories." The tour was led by Harry Stafford, M. Div., Ph.D and paranormal investigator.

People on the tour trying out their EMF meters.

This is the EMF meter that was handed out to everyone.
